I’M FLIRTY AND I KNOW IT… 

   I remember my flirty-girl days. There was a time, my college years up to BC (before children), that I had a flirty figure. I could dance and have the boys drooling at my feet.  A time when my body could back up the promise in my eyes. Ah, but I wax nostalgic.

I certainly WASN’T born to flirt. It was college when the dorky girl changed into a desirable young lady. Iexercised my flirtability  on many a college prep and had a blast. Dancing was the big thing back then, so yes, I flirted with the boys through rockin’ 80′s dance music.

LMFAO’s song, “I’m Sexy and I Know It” describes the dance scene back then. Dance moves were all about hips, butt, and sexy arms. Then, getting close to who you’re dancing with. Wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle, wiggle! Yeah!

Well, I met my husband  right out of college and guess what? He loved to dance! And he did it well. So we always had a great time dating and still do whenever there’s an affair to go to and there’s music.  We flirt with each across the dance floor and dance, oh so close.

Dancing was my way to flirt. But the flirt that worked for Raphael and Serena, of RELIC, was suggestive remarks. Check this out…

Wednesday evening, midnight, I finished writing Elixxir. Let me qualify that. I finished writing the first draft of Elixxir. You see, writing “The End” on a story is every author’s dream, but also our nightmare. Lurking just around the corner of “The End” is a host of steps before publication…  A couple of those are REVISION and EDITS. I happen to love revising and editing my work, especially with my editors. However, I cringe when I find I’ve repeated words too much and must replace them with other words. There are repeat offenders that I’ve worked diligently to keep down to a minimum once I’d been made aware of them. But it’s so damn hard sometimes to find the right ”other” word.  Let me share my old list with you.

So now, although Elixxir is finished, I must start over again to slash and burn, I mean refine and craft the best story ever. I’ve got my tools at hand… my peanut m&m’s and a thesaurus!

Peter Frampton had a way with lyrics and melody in the 70′s, but when Mig Ayesa revisited Baby, I Love Your Way for a reality show called, Rock Star INXS, I fell in love. This version is just so heartfelt and romantic, I had to include it here…

When a song moves me to tears over and over, when the words speak to my heart and the music sings to my soul, I know I’ve fallen in love. These three songs do it for me time and again. It’s songs like these that I think of when I write my romances.

Enjoy the romance of the day today. Find your love, whether right there next to you on the couch, or in the pages of your novel. Listen to these songs of love and know that I keep you in my heart.

Rome Wasn’t Built in a Day… Planning Your Splash onto the Scene

It’s hard to believe that my journey to publishing began in September of 2010. It was the April prior to that when I put fingers to the keyboard and created the world of the Brethren by writing Trinity and then Relic.  Five books later, and I can tell you, it’s been a wonderful blur and a skyrocketing learning curve. Today, I thought I’d share with you a couple of simple ideas that are actually crucial to your big splash as a newly published author.

Simple Idea #1

CLAIM YOUR REAL ESTATE

As soon as you have the slightest inkling that you want to take your writing hobby to the next level (putting it out there for others to read), get yourself a dot com! I’ve heard so many stories from author friends, who after getting their first sale, went to create their website only to find their top choice of names had been taken by someone else!

Then, start acquiring your real estate. Get a facebook page, twitter account, google account, etc. You’re not gonna know exactly what to do with all of these social media outlets right away, unless you’re already there. But don’t worry. It’s BEFORE you’re published that is the best time to play around with everything. Play around with a blog. Get a feel for your own unique style and voice. What do you want your site to look like? What do you want to offer on it? It’s scary, but believe me, there will be someone who will read your very first blog post. Link your blog to facebook and twitter so that people see your posts instantly. Post funny comments and comment on other’s posts. Go comment on other people’s blogs, too. That’s right. Blog surf! Offer your real estate (your blog) to newly published authors to promote themselves. They’ll likely return the favor when you become a newbie, too.

Now that you have all of your stuff in place, go after more. Get into email loops that focus on your genre of writing, or a group blog or two that you only have to post on a scheduled day. Get your name out there. EVEN BEFORE YOU’RE PUBLISHED.

Simple Idea #2

GROW YOUR TRIBE

Your tribe is your fan base. They are loyal followers who will promote you even when you’re sleeping. You mean you can have fans BEFORE you’re even published?! YES, YOU CAN! I blogged every day when I first started writing. People came, they commented, they subscribed. Then, when I got my first contract and began editing my manuscript, I started talking about it on my blog. I offered sneak peeks, a snippet here and there, teasers and tantalizers, on facebook and it drew a crowd. By the time TRINITY was published, I had people anticipating its release and then pre-ordering! Now, those very same people, and more, eagerly awaited Relic’s release.

Enlist your tribe to gather more members. Be creative. The sky’s the limit when pondering how to grow your tribe. What may work for one may not work for another. You just have to be willing to think outside the box and jump in with both feet.

And finally, reward your tribe members! They do so much for you, you must reciprocate. It doesn’t have to break your bank. It can be a small token of your appreciation. Maybe a special piece of writing meant only for them… But let them know how important they are and how much you care.
