Strong women save the day! I’d love to know your opinions, Rebecca, about young women playing a stronger leading role in books. No more the “Damsel in Distress”, they are blazing trails for the new heroine.
Actually this is an interesting question. I think, lately, that rather than seeing young women being stronger and stronger in young adult romantic fiction, I’m seeing a lot of quivering young girls who are happy to let the boys take the lead.
So, of course, I’m talking about Bella from Twilight. Now, I loved those books but, lets face it, Bella was not a real strong assertive chick other than she wanted to be Edward whether he was nice to her or not. As I was raised reading A Wrinkle in Time and watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer, I found it a little disconcerting that rather than Hermione in Harry Potter, a lot of the teenage girls seemed to really want to be Bella.
In the case of my own Young Adult series, The Warrior, Rachel is not at all wimpy. Now, she starts out afraid, which is fine, she’s being sent Upwards to the surface of the Earth, where she has never been before, to fight Vampires and Werewolves. Yet, she manages. And she never lets the boys in her life—and yes that is plural because she is currently seventeen years old—dictate her life for her.
I think in the world that we live in, it’s important that young women feel empowered to make their own decisions and chase their own joy. I hope that Rachel is indicative of this.
Subversive: The Warrior Book 3

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BLURB:
Rachel Clancy has been through a lot. She’s been sent to fight vampires, lost two boyfriends—one to a vampire and one because of his daddy issues—and now she is trying to lead a secret revolution that could change Genesis, her home, forever. Her confidence is shot, her hands are shaking, and she hasn’t felt a real emotion, except for anger, in a long time.
But Rachel should never be counted out. She sees things others can’t, even if her ideas are considered downright traitorous. There is an important life for Rachel to lead in the world, even if its filed with vampires and werewolves instead of romance and flowers. Rachel has always had to fight, she’s good at it, and the evil that has stalked her hasn’t forgotten her name.
