Rebecca Royce is in the Guest House with the SUBVERSIVE BLOG TOUR!

Strong women save the day!  I’d love to know your opinions, Rebecca, about young women playing a stronger leading role in books. No more the “Damsel in Distress”, they are blazing trails for the new heroine.

Actually this is an interesting question.  I think, lately, that rather than seeing young women being stronger and stronger in young adult romantic fiction, I’m seeing a lot of quivering young girls who are happy to let the boys take the lead.

So, of course, I’m talking about Bella from Twilight.  Now, I loved those books but, lets face it, Bella was not a real strong assertive chick other than she wanted to be Edward whether he was nice to her or not.  As I was raised reading A Wrinkle in Time and watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer, I found it a little disconcerting that rather than Hermione in Harry Potter, a lot of the teenage girls seemed to really want to be Bella.

In the case of my own Young Adult series, The Warrior, Rachel is not at all wimpy. Now, she starts out afraid, which is fine, she’s being sent Upwards to the surface of the Earth, where she has never been before, to fight Vampires and Werewolves. Yet, she manages.  And she never lets the boys in her life—and yes that is plural because she is currently seventeen years old—dictate her life for her.

I think in the world that we live in, it’s important that young women feel empowered to make their own decisions and chase their own joy.  I hope that Rachel is indicative of this.

BLURB:

Rachel Clancy has been through a lot. She’s been sent to fight vampires, lost two boyfriends—one to a vampire and one because of his daddy issues—and now she is trying to lead a secret revolution that could change Genesis, her home, forever. Her confidence is shot, her hands are shaking, and she hasn’t felt a real emotion, except for anger, in a long time.

But Rachel should never be counted out. She sees things others can’t, even if her ideas are considered downright traitorous. There is an important life for Rachel to lead in the world, even if its filed with vampires and werewolves instead of romance and flowers. Rachel has always had to fight, she’s good at it, and the evil that has stalked her hasn’t forgotten her name.

AUTHOR Bio and Links:

As a teenager, Rebecca Royce would hide in her room to read her favorite romance novels when she was supposed to be doing her homework. She hopes, these days, that her parents think it was well worth it.

Rebecca is the mother of three adorable boys and is fortunate to be married to her best friend. They live in northern New Jersey and try not to freeze too badly during the winter months.

She’s in love with science fiction, fantasy, and the paranormal and tries to use all of these elements in her writing. She’s been told she’s a little bloodthirsty so she hopes that when you read her work you’ll enjoy the action packed ride that always ends in romance. Rebecca loves to write series because she loves to see characters develop over time and it always makes her happy to see her favorite characters make guest appearances in other books.

In Rebecca Royce’s world anything is possible, anything can happen, and you should suspect that it will.

Villians, by Guest Author Heaven Leigh Eldeen

We hate them and we love them. No, I’m not talking about our spouses. I’m talking about the ever evolving villains of today’s fiction world. The writers of our generation have slyly and creatively blurred the lines of good and evil to the point of confusion. The villains they have created stand in the grey area between right and wrong. One page has you falling in love with the character, then comes the grand betrayal. Your once chivalrous knight suddenly transforms into the treacherous troll under the bridge.

Gone are the days when the bad guys were easily detectable by the huge hairy moles on the end of their freakishly protruding noses and maniacal hack saw teeth. Replacing their hideous appearance, now stands an ultra-sexy, uber-fit, flesh statue carved by the gods themselves.

With the mad-scientist lab coat in the trash, they don expensive tailor made suits and evening gowns that most of us wish we could afford to sniff. Their plots of evil doing no long involve taking over the tri-state area. Their conspiracies still centers around ruling the world, but for an understandable reason. Some great injustice haunts their past, forming their future as a force to be feared and reckoned with.

And say goodbye to the times when they hid away in the shadows, watching their henchmen completely fail at carrying out their dastardly plans of destruction. As full fledge respected members of high society, super villains today have Ivy League educations, unlimited resources, and employ a full state of the art army of highly trained mercenaries. And this just covers our human arch nemeses.

Our world is filling more and more with the ever growing paranormal fiction phenomenon. No longer do we care for the clichéd everyday anthropoid. We crave fangs, claws, and powers beyond our wildest understandings. But these traits banish them to the edges of our world, watching from the outside in.

A hunger for acceptance builds with-in those creatures so deep, leaving them no other options than to destroy all that is around them in the hope for their races survival, making their causes a tad more justifiable. I mean who wouldn’t like to see their race of shape shifting, cannibalistic, Neanderthals finally being accepted in a world that previously rejected them to the sewers of Gotham City?

With their super natural abilities, they suavely manipulate you into trusting their labyrinth of lies, wanting them carnally, believing in their campaign of annihilating innocence and willing to do anything for them ,short of suicide. I am guilty of falling in lust with my fair share of bad boys and sulking in a pit of jealousy over the bad girls before and after their intentions were revealed.

But for the new twists on how we perceive villains, I am thankful. Without the trailblazer’s of yesterday’s paranormal fiction world, my novella, The Demon Side, probably would have been laughed out of the writing world.

The Demon SideBlurb

“Every kid has problems. Every kid has even more problems when they move to a new home. But when a kid with problems moves to a new home that has a Demon living inside it—look out!

Etta’s world is about to spin out of control when she encounters her new roommate—and Rahovart, that ancient trickster, is in for a few surprises too. So don’t mind all the crashing and rumbling; that’s just the normal noise Angels and Demons make when they’re fighting an epic war in the attic.

One thing’s for sure: Etta and Rahovart will have to go through Hell to Heaven and back again before that old Victorian home in Quantico Town finally quiets down… “

Excerpt:

Etta plopped back onto her bed and stared at the ceiling for a few moments. I wished I could hear her thoughts. Her father had just admitted to being a murderer for all practical purposes, though that was not how I viewed him. I truly believed John only tried to save the village, but his fervor and some help from a desperate Alastor, turned what should have been a heroic act into a bloodbath. Many men have unknowingly fallen from grace in the name of the greater good. Now, hopefully Etta would see that her father was just the victim of blurred lines between good and evil.

“What are you thinking?” I asked as I lay down next to her on the bed.

“Can a person still go to Heaven even if they’ve killed someone?”

“Well, I’m not in the business of getting people to Heaven, Etta. That’s the last place I want them to go,” I reluctantly replied.

“Even if it were me?” Etta stared hard at me with watery eyes, looking right into my blackened soul. I never gave much thought to where her soul would go, except to stop her from mistakenly giving it to me.

“That is a choice for you to make. I can’t force you to choose a side. I can only put the temptations in front of you.”

“You didn’t answer my question.”

“What do you want me to say? I want to see you burn in the depths of Hell? You’ll never hear that from me. Only you and your actions can decide where you go when you leave this world.”

“I would go if it meant I could be with you, you know.”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” As much as I would have loved for that to be the case, her comment angered me. I couldn’t imagine a person like her becoming something like me.

“I know that when you’re around I feel safe nothing could ever hurt me. I get butterflies in my stomach when you touch me. I know your soul, Ra. I don’t know how, but I know. I knew it the second I saw you. You weren’t meant for this existence. You fought for good once, and I’m certain you will again.” Etta was strong in words. She spoke with solid confidence. She described what I felt.
