In honor of Mother’s Day, I always have my students write a poem for influential women in their lives. We go outside and observe nature around us, then brainstorm nature we have seen and experienced elsewhere. Our poems then compare these women to nature, hence the title, “Mother’s Nature”. Here is my poem for you to enjoy. Happy Mother’s Day to all!
an instinctive propensity to protect
to shield from the harsh realities of the world
providing shelter from the cruelties that lie beyond her embrace
within her cocoon
lies safety, comfort, and joy
a gentle prod to go explore
a heart wrenching nod, an overzealous smile of assurance
as one step is taken with a tentative glance, then two
never looking back again
invisible tethers woven from the fabric of time
strong and secure
ready to reel in and release
an eternal place to migrate to again and again
a place called, home
