It’s Only Words

I’ll be your best friend
No one cares for you the way I do
I love you, for eternity

It’s only words

What kind of friend is it
who asks so much
yet gives so little
Draining the soul
and leaving one emotionally undernourished?

Attentiveness, possessiveness
Manipulating relationships
Carefully pruning away vital organs
until you are the only one left to sustain us
This kind of caring deadens the heart

As for love, well, you can’t convince me
that love is eternal by whispering sweet nothings in my ear
Beyond the pages of a romance novel
interest and attraction fade
leaving only traces and echoes

Words that began as absolute truths
turn into broken promises
Meaning seeps through the  crevices of time
leaving empty shells until

It’s only words

  1. This is exactly what I needed to hear. I’ve got a couple of people that I thought were friends, but it seems that it’s only when it’s convenient for them or when they want something. Something I’ve always taught my boys is words don’t mean anything if your actions don’t back them up.

I agree, Chelle. I’ve taught my girls that there are too many people in this world to settle for the kinds of relationships like the ones mentioned above. Thank goodness, they have listened well.
